Road Warriors Access Google Reader Offline

For all of you road warriors looking for ways to keep up-to-date with your latest blogs and news sites, I’ve got good news for you. Google Reader can be read offline.

A few quick steps will get you reading sites offline.

  1. Install Google Gears. Google Gears is an open source extension that enables you to pull data onto your machine for offline functionality.
  2. Restart your browser.
  3. Open Google Reader and accept it for use with Google Gears.
  4. You will now see a green dot with a white arrow showing that reader is in online mode.
  5. Click the arrow to shift to offline. There will be a slight pause while the Reader downloads the feeds to your machine.
  6. Set your browser to work offline.
  7. You can now close your browser.

When you open your browser and go to reader.google.com it will open the reader allowing you to view the posts. Keep in mind that only text will render. The reader does not store images or video.

When you get back online remember a couple of quick steps.

  1. Uncheck the Work Offline option in your browser.
  2. Click on the blue arrow in Reader to re-engage online access to your feeds.
