Last night to my delight, my wife and I caught a current episode of the BBC television show "Doctor Who" on PBS. I remember fondly as a lad back in the late 70′s and early 80′s watching the quintessential Doctor Who #4 played by Tom Baker (pictured above). The show still in production is as campy as ever with albeit better special effects. They are now up to Doctor Who #9.
I enjoyed watching my wife enjoying the show for the first time as much as watching it myself. I do believe I’ve found the latest sci-fi fan. In her words, "It’s just so cool." if you are a Doctor Who fan of yester-year, check out the Doctor Who site. If not, check it out anyway. It’s Good clean sci-fi fun.

Phil,
Tis nothing finer than a bowl of popcorn and a BBC program on the telly!
I’ll have to see if Doctor Who is on my local networks. When I was a kid, I caught a few episodes, but I never seemed to be able to catch many of them. Loved that show.
Unrelated, there was a Dr. Who pinball game in an arcade I went to in the early 90′s, and it was the best pinball game I have ever played.
Have you caught the Sci-Fi channel Dr. Who? I liked it, it was campy, just like the original. It just didn’t grab me though. Sci-Fi also has a Flash Gordon remake, but I haven’t watched it.
Dave,
Quite so, quite so. How splendid an evening indeed.
Mike,
No, but the Flash Gordon sounds excellent. My favorite Sci-Fi Series are themed from the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s. Those were the days of Sci-Fi. More contemporary stuff somehow misses it for me. I don’t have cable, so I’m not catching stuff on Sci-Fi. But that and the history channel are almost enough for me to subscribe. I am noticing more movement in web video, so I will probably continue to look for options in that medium and up my broadband to accommodate.
I thought that I heard the BBC lets you watch their stuff off of the web, but I haven’t checked it out myself. I just looked at Sci Fi’s Dr. Who website, and I don’t recognize either of the actors, so they must have changed it since I last watched.
Do you have some way to watch the web video on your television? For some reason, I just don’t want to watch long videos on my PC, for some I put them on DVD to watch on my television. One other bonus to that is that I can share them with my wife.
Mike, I’ve just started catching some video here and there on the web. I predict major revolution in this area in the next 12 to 18 months. A year from now it will be common place, so I’m somewhat thinking forward a bit. With technology like WiMax on ready to roll-out, folks are going to have hi-speed wireless connection in a big way. I’m a patient techie I guess. Never been a big fan of the cable industry. I anticipate getting rid of my last TV within the next year or so.
Doctor Who cycles through different actors over the course of time. They are now starting on Doctor #10 which isn’t bad since the series started like in the early 60′s I believe.
Hmmm… I think the trend is going to bring the computer to the living room, or at least the technology device. You have the Xbox 360 which plays HD-DVD as well as media from your computer, the Sony PS3 which plays BlueRay, the Nintendo WII that can surf the net and play web videos, and finally, Apple TV which plays the iTunes from your computer. Then there is the Sling Catcher, which I think is what I am going to get.
I agree that more and more people are going to consume their video from the internet, but I think they will watch it in the living room.
As for Doctor Who, I knew that they switch the actor that plays Doctor Who, but I thought the Sci Fi series is independent from the BBC series. Not being a regular watcher, I may be wrong.
Phil,
David Tennant is the current Doctor (#10) but he didn’t just start, this is his third year. He is currently filming the 4th season of Doctor Who in England. He replaced Christopher Eccelston who was the Doctor for just the first year of the new series.
Rick, ah yes I seem to remember someone on Pownce mentioning that the BBS was broadcasting #10 in England but not yet in the States. I just caught #9 on PBS, which has just brought my attention back to Doctor Who. I’ll be looking for more opps online or on PBS to see the show. I hear Doctor #10 is as good as #9. Thanks for the feedback.
Wow! I went and looked it up, and the actors I remember were on the show have been replaced, but it looks like it is the same show.
It just seemed like the first episodes I saw on Sci Fi were the first episodes of the series, or maybe it was Christopher Eccleston’s first episode. He is listed as being Doctor Who in 2005.
When I watched it, it was Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper on the show.
Thanks for helping to clear up the confusion Phil and Rick.
