There and Back Again

Yes, it's a great title for any adventure, Thank you Mr. Tolkein. My wife, kiddos and I embarked on the 4th of July from Austin up through Santa Fe, New Mexico on to South Central Colorado for a twelve day journey. We enjoyed Family Camp with Sky Ranch at Ute Trail where we made new friends, went horse back riding, kayaking, white water rafting, tomahawk throwing, skeet shooting, hiking, and a plethora of other activities; a wonderful getaway from our everyday life. On our return trip we

KOA in Abilene, TX is OK

Finding it a challenge to get good honest reviews of decent destinations on the web for overnight stays, I want to give a thumbs-up to the KOA in Abilene. Too many KOA campgrounds I've seen have been little more than a wide spot in the road. This one, though immediately off I-20, is proving to be an excellent overnight stop over on the way to more majestic views of Northern New Mexico and Colorado. For a family of five, the cabins have two rooms that accomodate us very well. The restrooms we

Is it the GWW instead of the WWW?

Is it the GWW instead of the WWW?

Maybe Tim Berners-Lee the man credited with the invention of the World Wide Web (not our buddy Al Gore) was actually not thinking big enough. Will the web shortly be renamed Galaxy-Wide Web? It seems that Google has their sites set on taking the web into our galaxy. From the Google Lunar X Prize site, "The Google Lunar X PRIZE is a $30 million competition for the first privately funded team to send a robot to the moon, travel 500 meters and transmit video, images and data back to th

This Parrothead is Happy

Being a Jimmy Buffett fan for the last 20+ years, I've enjoyed more than a few albums and caught a couple of live shows. He was one of the main inspirations in picking-up the guitar when I was a spry 16 years-old. Jimmy always puts on a great show. Today I landed upon the Jimmy Buffett Live in Anguilla album I've been eyeing for a while and to my delight the two CD set included an 82 minute DVD of the performance. The footage starts-out in an intimate setting on the beach with Jimmy accompanie

Power of Delayed Gratification

Power of Delayed Gratification

Good things do come to those who wait. It's a very unpopular concept, especially in our commercial driven culture that screams-out for us to constantly spend now and pay later. As a culture we have grown so accustomed to living in debt that it seems normal. In fact, prior to World War II, only 2 percent of Americans had a house mortgage and now it's the opposite with only 2 percent of homeowners not having a mortgage. In September I wrote the post, "Delayed Purchases Pay Huge Dividends

Quite a Daydream Huh Jason?

Finally American Idol caught up to me this year. I've never been an avid watcher but I think having pre-teens in the house is what got me hooked. Jason Castro was by far my favorite singer. I like his laid-back style. Well, it was nice while it lasted. Hope to see and hear more from you soon Jason.

12 More to Lose by 40

Another update in keeping accountable with the world in my quest to lose weight. So far I've dropped ten lbs. from my tubbiest 202. But officially I set my starting weight at 200, so I've really lost eight pounds. With four months left it's a good start, but just the beginning. My pants certainly fit better. The shift in weight has come from some minor dietary changes. I've not yet gotten into any consistent exercise program which would help me break the 190 marker. If it weren't for those al

Refurb Madness

Decision to fix-up the house rather than move, some cash in-hand and a new Lowe's opens within a mile of my house all makes for a very dangerous combination. We've developed a long list of projects and purchases for the house and it seems that I'm singlehandedly knocking stuff off the list everyday. Somewhere along the way I got the idea to get it done quickly, so every evening I'm laboring away cleaning, painting, shopping and scheming my next move. One thing I've quickly discovered is that

Google Gets Goofy on April Fools Day

Google Gets Goofy on April Fools Day

If you haven't looked at your calendar today, it's April Fools Day. Last year Google posted some really funny April Fools jokes; one being Gmail Paper where you can have your archive snail mailed and the other being Google TiSP which was free in-home wireless broadband that was routed through your toilet. I am usually fairly enamored with what Google does but today's jokes just don't compare with last years. Gmail Custom Time is an overused joke messing with time stamps. Of the two gDay with MAT

Thought Sparking for a Year Now

Actually this blog started in February of 2007 but I figured it's worth noting all the same. It's been an interesting ride. The blog started slowly premiering on blogspot before metriculating over to its own domain shortly thereafter. Spring, summer and early fall were quite an active season for the site. The winter has been a bit slower with gaps in posting. I could probably write a good post on how to kill blog momentum. This site has been an interesting platform to post tech and productivity
