Checklist for Setting Up a WordPress Website

Posted on June 17, 2008

Setting up WordPress websites has become a regular part of my work. Much more than just for blogs, the platform is ideal for rapidly launching sites. In fact, nine out of ten WP sites I launch are non-blogging sites. I thought for my sake and for others who are looking for a checklist for what needs to be done to setup a WordPress website, I’d punch out a basic checklist for the process. This may get quite lengthy, but hopefully it will be a helpful resource to make sure all the bases are covered.

Hosting

WordPress Install

Basic WordPress Configuration

Install Plug-ins

Design the Theme

Before Going Live

There’s the initial run-down. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Depending on requirements the design phase could become quite lengthy. There are also a boat load of other plugins, but those are the most common ones I use for a typical configuration. I may continue to add items down the line as they come to mind. Any good suggestions will be added as well.

Ah, but the plugin list isn’t quite complete. I highly recommend the Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin if you are going to be maintain the installation. Easiest way I’ve found to keep a blog up to date.

Josh, very good thought. In terms of upgrade you’ve got a great point. I just like it’s simple implementation and auto back-up on a weekly basis. There is something comforting to know that all my sites data is backed-up on a regular basis. I’ll have to work with the automatic upgrade plugin soon as some of my sites are a little dated under the hood. Thanks!

I hired a guy who built me a perfectly fine commercial site, but I want to get my hand into Wordpress to build another site on my own with the ability to edit or blog on a weekly basis. I have both mac and pc systems but would prefer to do all of the work on my mac. Is it possible to do so from a mac and is it possible to then edit via mac or pc?

Thomas, Yes you should have no problem working with WordPress from Mac or PC. Aside from uploading installation and plug-in files, everything can pretty much be done in the browser. Many hosts even proven a click-and-install option for an instance of WordPress.
