12 More to Lose by 40

Posted on May 2, 2008

Another update in keeping accountable with the world in my quest to lose weight. So far I’ve dropped ten lbs. from my tubbiest 202. But officially I set my starting weight at 200, so I’ve really lost eight pounds. With four months left it’s a good start, but just the beginning. My pants certainly fit better. The shift in weight has come from some minor dietary changes. I’ve not yet gotten into any consistent exercise program which would help me break the 190 marker.

If it weren’t for those all-day staff meetings and working lunches I’d get there much sooner. I think that’s one of my major downfalls. Still, to get anywhere near 180 I’m going to have to work much harder. From what I’ve heard the first ten pounds are always the easiest. I’ve never gotten serious about weightloss before so this is new ground for me.

Efforts like this remind me of how challenging it is to make fundamental lifestyle changes as one matures in age. Hard but not impossible. I for one do not want to be one of those folks who gets more and more set in my ways as I grow older. I think you have to fight the force of habit all along the way. Otherwise I’ll wake-up one day fat, sedentary and suffering as a result of it.

Chinese Proverb: Knowing is the easy part. It’s the doing that’s hard.

It’s funny because I had a great deal of trouble controlling my weight at a younger age, and now, looking back, it’s because I wasn’t armed with the right knowledge. I exercised a lot, but I ate all wrong. I thought it was healthy eating, but it wasn’t. Lot’s of drive, no information.

Reading Men’s health has given me a wealth of exercises, motivation, recipes, and nutritional knowledge, but I have trouble with the time needed to cook healthy and exercise. Lot’s of information, no drive.

Keep up the work Phil! I like exercising first thing in the morning. I find that if I arrange clothes and everything else that I need the night before, I can get out of the house before I come up with an excuse. Then afterwards, I always feel like the hardest part of the day is over.

Mike, that’s a really good tip. I do need get more serious about exercise. I know it would make a big difference. The deal w/ weight loss is consistency which I’m notorious inconsistent in personal disciplines. I used to bike and bus to work but that came to close two and a half years ago when I changed jobs.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am really trying to stay tenacious.

I have found that long term planning is vital. Back in 2006 I went from just slightly bigger than the size I was in October 2007 to the size I am now and then stopped. From May 2006 to the October 2007 I managed to under all that work.

This time however I have been doing as you have been saying - changing my lifestyle and measuring the success by the new size I become. I must admit that working out has been a big part of it as at 280 I have some serious inertia to overcome.

If I continue as I have been (on average) I will be my target size by March 2009 or sooner. My plan is to maintain the healthy lifestyle by aiming for targets beyond size. I plan to have a go at the 2010 London Marathon as well as getting involved in some other outdoor sports.

Wow Matt, going for a Marathon. That’s really cool. I’ll be cheering for you from this side of the pond for sure.

Exercise, that’s the next thing I need to get more serious about. (After I get over this stomach thing I’ve had the last couple of days). Long-term goals with short-term action seems to be very powerful. I am finding weight loss a bit frustrating at the moment as it goes up as quickly as it drops. Consistency is definitely the key (which is one of my biggest issues).
