Appeasing the Meme Gods

Posted on October 30, 2007

The universe is off-balance again. I’ve by-passed too many memes and the narcissistic deities hovering over my computer have finally caught-up with me. I shall bring the yin and yang back in harmony by taking part in one of these gratuitous self-indulgent trips down music lane. My deep apologies for the numerous memes I’ve let pass me by. I sincerely wish I could keep pace, ah but life has a way of overtaking our best intentions.

If there is any blogger out there that taps my virtual shoulder to encourage me in a bit of frivolous narration, it would be Kelly at kellementology.com. She is a persistent soul that passes along some of the most interesting literary challenges. Being the peculiar sort that I am, I’m going to do half of the double meme with a twist. So here goes with what’s on my playlist, only mine is a list of songs I’m currently playing and learning on the guitar.

So there you have it; the songs I’m picking at most evenings when I’m taking a break from stuff. My favorite at the moment is Blackbird by the Beatles as I’m learning the very complex lead part. Very fun to practice.

I tag Mike, Scott, Micki, Matt and Sam. No worries if you aren’t a musician, you can pick-up with the normal meme but I know that at least Scott will have a list to rattle-off. I think he’s been tagged on this one already, but perhaps he’ll join me in this different spin on it. And the band plays on…

Excellent list, Phil. I actually know many of those songs. Woot! Blackbird and Sweet Baby James are favorites. My highschool sweetheart (who I almost married) used to play Blackbird. I actually learned to play it on the piano, too, but clearly, it doesn’t sound quite the same. You can’t exactly get a piano to make that interesting sound guitar strings make when you slide your fingers over to get that next chord…I’m singing and grinning right now!

I agree - a good mix of songs to be sure. Redemption song is a favorite, as long as I don’t have to try to sing it.

I haven’t been playing my guitar nearly enough lately (shame on me) but I think I can assemble something.

That’s a whole bunch of songs to learn! I was never blessed with any musical ability, I can’t even whistle well. :-)

Thanks for the tag Phil! Scott tagged me as well, but I think I can work something out.

Kelly, Some songs just need the right instruments don’t they? Blackbird is certainly one of those. I’ve got a ways to go but I get a good start on it.

Scott, I’ve been playing since I was sixteen. I wish I could remember all the songs I learned along the way. Lately I’ve had a renewed burst of inspiration in playing. Been focusing intros and lead parts which is fun. I find it to be one of the most relaxing things I can do.

Mike, We all have our gifts and abilities. If I were a bit more gifted in that area perhaps I’d be a musician instead of a techie. Mostly I just enjoy picking and grinning.

    The Evolution Of A Meme…

Phil over at Thoughtsparks recently posted a list of songs he is playing and learning on his guitar, a twist in the response to Kelly’s Soundtrack Meme.

I thought it was comment-worthy and the fact that he tagged me just forces me to take the tim…

    Hi Phil,
    Thanks for the tag.

I have to admit that I am not good in this. FYI, I don’t even know those song name that I love singing - kind of strange - right? However, I could name church songs without any problem at all such as:
    - Jesus Knows And Cares
    - Amazing Grace
    - What a Friend we have in Jesus
    - To God Be The Glory
    - Sing and Be Happy
    - Join in exaltation
    - Grace all sufficient

    God bless

[…] I am really changing this Meme. Phil tagged me with a Meme that I had already been tagged with, and I didn’t want to post the same thing over again. […]

    Sam,

Some of those hymns are old favorites of mine. Have you caught wind of the Christian British invasion with artists like Matt Redman and Delirious? Really good stuff.

    Phil,

Sorry, those name doesn’t strike my mind.

FYI, based on the scripture text, Ephesians 5:19 - “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,” we believe in singing a cappella during worship.

    Blessings to you, Phil.

[…] made the re-acquaintance is the song “Blackbird” by the Beatles. I mentioned it in Appeasing the Meme Gods post as one of the songs I’m learning. Finally, I’m just starting to get to the point […]
