Arena Football, a Very Quirky Idea
Posted on April 23, 2007
This past Saturday evening my daughter danced in the half-time show of a new professional football league here in Austin, Texas. Arena football is a bazarre pseudo-American football game with a fifty-yard field, fireworks, hooters girls and cheap footballs bouncing off the walls. (Not to mention the players). It’s kind of a cross between football and rugby with the tacky flair of the World Wide Wrestling Federation. As you can see from the photo, when the players run out of bounds, they literally hit the side padding. Kick-off entails catching a ball that bounces off the netting unless it flies between the nets and lands in the locker room when the whistle is blown. Now, as a UT grad and proud Longhorn, I don’t see much hope for a pro team in a town like Austin, especially one this hoky.
