New Location for Thought Sparks

Filed under Web and Tech Helps

I finally got around to making the transition from Blogger to thoughtsparks.net. The design will go through some revision soon, but getting moved over was the first major issue. The main thing was the value of transitioning to an independent domain fairly early on in the life of the blog. I’m getting some traction in terms of traffic and as the site develops it’s always better to make changes early. Drop me a comment and let me know what you think.

I fully aprove. You might want to consider getting some engine friendly ULs going on. Dig up Lord Matt, Andy Beard or MySelf on MyBlogLog. I’m sure someone will know your platform and how best to do it.

Looks really nice! :D But as Matt suggest, make your links look prettier by changing the permalinks in the Wordpress admin panel :)

Yes, thanks to both of you. I hadn’t yet looked into changing to user-friendly links in WordPress. I’ve done rewrites and redirections by code, but very cool and not surprising that WordPress makes it so darn easy. For someone who codes for a living, it’s very cool to have an easy user interface for those types of issues. I’m all about doing the harder stuff, but when it’s done for you, so much the better.

It looks great, but I just realized that it’s the template I use. What great taste you have! hahahaha. I’m thinking of switching as well, but I don’t know anything about code — let alone doing it for a living. Is there hope for someone like me and this switching business, or should I give up? Honestly. I love my wordpress blog and don’t want to start all over again. Resources?

    A good move!

Kelly, yeah I have an advantage as I do this for a living, so it doesn’t take me long. But on the other hand, setting up a basic WordPress instance on your own domain is actually not too terribly difficult. The documentation calls it a famous 5 minute install which it would take you a bit longer, but it’s really not that tough. Perhaps I’ll do a write-up on it on the blog, but you can find a lot of info out there that should guide your steps. Let me know if you have any questions, I’d be glad to help you. BTW, I’d go with 1and1.com over something like GoDaddy.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve done much reading already, but sometimes get lost in it all. And thank you for your offer of help. I may take you up on that. A post would be helpful as well. If I actually pull this off, then I’ll definitely be writing about it — credit to you, of course!

Kelly, I’ll do some work on a post. Definitely ping me if you have some questions. Give yourself time to go step-by-step. It will come together. If you are serious about growing your online presence, your own domain will do wonders for you in the long-run.
