Site Reference Helps Add Value

If you publish a website or a blog, you are an expert in what you know. Or if you don't consider yourself  an expert, most likely you know much more about your topic than many of your readers. With every topic comes a set of vocabulary that the reader must know in order to properly understand your message. While topic specific jargon is true of any area of focus, this is especially indicative of technical related sites. For many readers all of the acronyms seem like vegetable soup: What doe

What do these four things have in common?

Remember the game from when you were a kid? You look at four pictures and identify what's similar about them. Have you guessed yet? If you said they are all broken, you won. A lights out, a screen door doesn't work, a towel rack has come loose from the wall and the lawn mower is dying on me. Need new code to stop spam submission through forms? Need an event site added in Spanish? Need to manage other technical communication processes. Got you covered. Need to change a light bulb, replace

Post to Blog from MSN Messenger with Plug-in

I found a handy widget through imified.com that allows you to post directly to a WordPress blog from MSN Messenger. This was originally posted live from MSN before later being edited. They have widgets for Blogger, Live Journal and other blog applications in addition to apps like Google Calendar. Several things things to keep in mind:  Messenger normal messages are limited so you'll want to get a plug-in from msgpluslive which will extend the capability to 1,000 characters. You

Open IE Tab within FireFox

If you are like me, you have long preferenced FireFox for a whole host of reasons. Firefox is quicker, more secure, has tabbed function, cool skins and nice plug-ins. IE 7 has tried to catch-up but with tabs and safer browsing but it's still hurty if you ask me. The Firefox community is on the mark in development and have come out with my favorite plug-in to date: IE Tabs in FireFox. You can set the preferences for a site to always come up an IE tab or if you hit a site and want to view it in

Arena Football, a Very Quirky Idea

This past Saturday evening my daughter danced in the half-time show of a new professional football league here in Austin, Texas. Arena football is a bazarre pseudo-American football game with a fifty-yard field, fireworks, hooters girls and cheap footballs bouncing off the walls. (Not to mention the players). It's kind of a cross between football and rugby with the tacky flair of the World Wide Wrestling Federation. As you can see from the photo, when the players run out of bounds, they literall

A Rose by Any Other Name

I like Monday mornings. It may be strange to you, but I enjoy the start of new weeks, the challenges and opportunities. I enjoy starting new things, I enjoy the beginning of each new season and all that it brings. As an avid gardner, Springtime is my favorite time of the year. I'm kind of an accidental gardner in that I love to see just what happens. You won't find a lot of straight lines in my beds or a pristine lawn free of weeds. I love the natural follage. Thoughts are like gardens, not the

Thought Sparkers Making the Thinking Blog Meme

After being tagged by Not Fearing Change and by Christy's Coffee Break twice, I figure I am due to pass on a little link love and also tell about some of the dynamic thought provoking bloggers in the blogosphere. While there are many that come to my mind, here are some that may not have yet gotten recognition, but are worth mentioning: Lars-Christian may one day be rich and famous. He started Bloggst, which is a great resource for bloggers. I'm inspired by this young man's creative and en

Create Category as a Page in WordPress

Once you get used to working in WordPress, you'll find it pretty easy to customize. One nifty way to populate pages that are updated from your blog is to break-out your posts into four our five main categories. Then you can hard-code those pages into your main menu. This will make management of your site super slick. Once you have identified each of those categories: Log into your WordPress admin Click on Presentation Tab Click on Theme Editor Under Theme Files, click on H

How to Redirect Specific Blogger Posts

Since I am in the middle of redirecting traffic from my blogspot site to thoughtsparks.net, I thought I'd pass along a great tip to encourage others to do likewise. First off, here's what I don't recommend: use a meta redirect or javascript redirect from the front page. It will mess with your search ranking as search engines see that as a no no. However, it may be worth redirecting your most popular posts to the new site. Ideally Google would offer a 301 permanent redirect from your blogspot UR
